Reader's Mail: Can We See More Photos Of La Lombarda?
A reader just wrote:
"HI, WE HAVE BOOKED LA LOMBARDA FOR MAY AND ARE REALLY EXCITED. ANY CHANCE OF MORE PHOTOS?"
And so, if you don't mind a bit of self-promotion (hey, we are super proud!) here are some photos of La Lombarda. So far on websites we have posted a photo of the entrance side, let's call it the front. It is painted a deep red and at night is lit with very striking LED lights. The opposite side of La Lombarda, by contrast, is painted orange and has a very different look. You wouldn't know they were the same building, if shown side-by-side, and in my opinion, the orange side is the more interesting. The orange side has an unusual, asymmetrical shape, the terraces (as it is the side that gets all the sun), and the orange side has retained much more of the look of the old building than this front, red side. Let's look at some details...

Hotels: Michelin Recommended Hotels In Stresa
The view from a room at Hotel Verbano.
In addition to the four Michelin fork-awarded restaurants in Stresa and the seven Michelin starred restaurants within 20 miles from Stresa, that we spoke about here, there are also many Michelin recommended hotels in Stresa listed in their Green Guide. Almost all of these hotels also have restaurants which are open to the public. Here is the list of Michelin hotels, to help you, in addition to other resources, decide what may be the best place for you to stay in Stresa. They are listed in the order in which Michelin lists them by their ranking. Included is a short description from the Michelin summary, and the rating.

News: Stresa In Hotel.com Top Ten List
Even I, who loves Stresa so much, was a bit surprised by this news item. Hotels.com, the leading online hotel reservation site, has Stresa placed at number 6 on its list of VIP Italian locations. What this list represents are those locations in Italy that not only show no signs of suffering due to the economy, but also have the most 'VIP' accommodations, that is, a high number of luxury hotel rooms, and therefore, a high average room rate. It's certainly true that Stresa has no shortage of world-famous hotels lining the lake: The Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees, the Hotel Regina, and Hotel Villa Aminta, to name a few.

Hotel Belvedere, Isola Pescatori -- Travelers' Choice Winner!
I spent some time wandering, on a very warm spring day last year , around tiny Isola Pescatore. When I stopped for lunch I chose to have it at the restaurant at the Hotel Belvedere. Sitting on the terrace, with the sun warming my skin, watching boats large and small cruise past, I thought to myself that this was a special little corner of the world. And although just a tiny corner, it seems that it has come to the attention of many others as well. Tiny Albergo Ristorante Belvedere, with only eight rooms, was recently chosen by Tripadvisor readers as one of the ten most romantic hotels in Europe. Wow.
From March through November Isola Pescatori can be somewhat crowded with tourists. But the Belvedere, located on the northeastern side, is on the opposite side of the island from the landing dock, and therefore quieter. That's why I chose it for my lunch spot. The gravel terrace has enough tables and umbrellas for 200, and the restaurant inside seats the same amount. The menu is a nice selection of fresh local fish, cheese made in the Ossala valley, Piemontese wines, even the rice is from a local producer. The carefully tended garden surrounding the terrace had bowers of climbing plants that were only starting to open when I was there. Imagine how they are blooming by the middle of the summer.
I walked through the indoor restaurant. It often hosts banquests and wedding receptions. Old photographs show that at one time the walls were covered completely in small stones, but a renovation in 2004 covered them. The eight guest rooms were also renovated at that time. Six of the rooms have large balconies that look out towards Isola Madre. All the rooms have en suite baths, some with hydromassage tubs, and all have their own heating and air conditioning systems.
The tourist boats do not run all night to the island; in fact they stop around dinner time even in the high season. Therefore, the crowds of the day leave. The island takes on a different persona then, with only its 50 full-time residents and a handful of guests. It becomes still, peaceful, and quiet. Guests who want to come for dinner at one of the restaurants need to make private arrangements with a water taxi. Guests staying at the hotel can stroll, listen to the water, watch the lights twinkling in Stresa and Baveno. It does sound romantic, doesn't it?

A Place For Everyone
.jpg)
Stresa has a full range of places to stay: old-world 4- and 5-star hotels to small, family-run 2- and 3-star ones, to comfortable Bed and Breakfasts in charming homes, agriturismos, and self-catering apartments in all sizes and locations. There is something for every budget, every traveler, every desire. Whether you want to stay in the center of town, in solitude up in the mountains, in a luxury hotel, or with locals in their Bed and Breakfast, there's a place for you.
The best way to find accommodations and read reviews is by using the major booking sites. Not all places are listed on all sites, so you may want to look at several sites and compare. You may want to contact accommodations privately if you have questions. Things to be certain of are the EXACT location (will you be able to walk where you want to go? Is there parking for your car?), the condition, the amenities (do you need a washing machine? WiFi? English TV channels?), the total, final price, and so on.
Most accommodations in Stresa are listed on at least one of the following sites:
HomeAway
Holiday Lettings/Trip Advisor
Booking.com
Airbnb
This hotel list, from a older post, still serves as a good list in one place of the main hotels in Stresa. The list is organized in descending order, beginning with the five-star hotels and then down. Most of the hotels listed have links to their own websites or you can find them on the above booking sites.
And hey, we can't let pass this opportunity to mention our own Stresa Apartments. La Lombarda offers four apartments in the center of Stresa, while Bella Vista has four apartments five minutes up the mountain, in charming Someraro, with stunning lake views. Take a look at stresaapartments and contact us if you would like more information.
This is our West apartment at Bella Vista. Contact us for information on all our apartments!

Some recent questions have been about particular places to stay, and I offer them here now, perhaps they will be of interest or help to you.
Q: Just came across your site while looking for info about the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. We are taking our first trip to Lake Maggiore in the summer with our 3 children and are looking for good ideas for things to do. Your site is great, really good ideas and very helpful - thanks! Now have a long list of things we want to do!
We are staying just outside Verbania at the Isolino camping village and I was wondering how easy it is to get into Stresa from there? We are arriving by train and have not yet decided whether we need to hire a car to get about.
A: Isolino is well located, but it's not really precisely in any of the towns. It's inbetween several lovely ones, Verbania, Baveno, Mergozzo, and of course, Stresa. Isolino is about 2 km from the train station. The bus stop, Verbania Fondotoce, is closer, but still 1 mile from Isolino. You can use the bus to get to many of the towns in the area, including Stresa, maybe you saw that link... You can also take the ferries between certain towns, and I hope you do that also. There is parking at Isolino. A car would certainly offer you more flexibility, and allow you to do more. Parking in the other towns during summer months may be difficult, but not impossible.
This reader's question gives the opportunity to bring Isolino Camping Village to your attention. Isolino is a large, family-oriented holiday village on its own private stretch of lake beachfront in Verbania. It offers residences of all sizes, from tent sites to caravans to small apartments. There are full amenities including restaurants and shops, and a very full range of activities. For families with children (this reader's are 6, 9, and 11) Isolino could be a truly ideal choice.
Q: The Hotel Belvedere gets high recommendations online with amazing views and helpful staff. But I am afraid we will be constrained by being on an island and it may cost us a lot to keep getting to shore. One of the former guests indicated that there is a "3-day ferry pass." Is this available? Is it convenient….does the ferry run all day and into the evening?
A: Regarding staying at Hotel Belvedere on Isola dei Pescatori, I think it is a very personal decision whether to stay on the island or the mainland. But to help you decide I will tell you these things. The island is very very small. There are two hotels and several restaurants. There is not much else to do. Therefore, if you are a traveler who will enjoy this solitude in the evenings this will be very special. But if you don't like to feel so isolated, perhaps this isn't the best choice.
As for the ferries, as Hotel Belvedere cautions on their own site, the ferries do not run in the evenings, past 6:30 actually, and so all comings and goings to the island would have to be arranged with private water taxis. And unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, there is not a three-day ferry pass available. There is a one-day pass available for unlimited travel between the three islands and Stresa, for 12 euro. You can refer to the ferry schedule here.
Albergo Ristorante Belvedere is a very lovely spot on tiny Isola dei Pescatori. The restaurant seats about 200, but the hotel only has a few rooms. Even if you're not staying on the island it could be a wonderful lunch spot, as they specialize in local fish and cuisine.Whether this is the right place for you to stay however, is a personal choice, you can visit Belvedere here to help you decide.
