Don't worry about bringing your clubs; you can rent everything you need for a day of golf at several public golf courses in the Stresa area. These three have combined their marketing efforts by creating a joint Web site, Lago Maggiore Golf, that links (pun intended) you to the greens.
Golf Verbania has two 9-hole courses, on beautiful flat terrain near Lago Mergozzo.
Golf des Iles Borromees is an 18-hole course in the hills above Lago Maggiore.
And Golf Alpino di Stresa, the course where the very first Italian Open was held, is a 9-hole course in Gignese.
All of these clubs have English versions of their Web sites. All the sites offer directions for getting there. None are far, but you will need a car. If you are staying in a hotel arrange for taxi service to bring you to the club and back. You can do the driving (pun intended again) when you're there.
Here are a few photos, just to get you into the swing (really bad pun, and I'm finished now) of it all.

While you can rent clubs, you should of course bring your own shoes if you intend to play golf. The golf clubs are very accustomed to tourists, and should be able to assist you with all of your needs.
