La Baia Rosa Bistrot - Stresa
La Baia Rosa Bistrot is the restaurant part of the Baia Rosa complex, which also includes La Baia Rosa pool and beach. Directly next to the beach and entrance to the pool, the restaurant is not, however, exclusively for their patrons; the main entrance faces the Carciano parking piazza, also near the cableway ticket office and station. Which means, yes, you have the awesome views of the gondolas arriving and departing, whether dining outside on their lakefront terrace or inside at the window bar. Not a bad view of the lake either... Inside, the decor is cool and casual. The restaurant serves everything from pizzas, salads, and sandwiches to full meals, and is open as a bar every night until midnight (except Wednesdays).

Ristorante Luci Sul Lago: A Hidden Spot Near Orta
Shhh... Let's call this one of those "secret" places, slightly off the beaten tourist track. For those of you visiting Lake Orta by car, after you visit the town, take the boat out to Isola San Giulio, walk through the Sacro Monte, after all that, if you would like a tranquil spot to reflect on your day in Orta, look for Luci sul Lago, located in a quiet little bay just outside the town of Orta, on the road to and from Stresa.
They offer everything from a simple aperitivo, to light meals and pizzas, to formal meals. We stopped there for a Sunday morning aperitivo and decided to stay for lunch. You can even cater weddings and events here, and when you see the location you'll see why. There's a beach club on one side, offering rental paddle boats, and a grass park area on the other, where you can picnic. And there is parking, if you get there at a lucky time. Otherwise, park along the road, as you will see everyone else doing.
Take a look at the gorgeous photos on their website; you'll want to make this your "secret" place in Orta too.

Winter, Sunday, Lunch On The Mountain
Where? At the top of Mt. Mottarone in winter. Spend a nice Sunday afternoon there, even if just for the lunch and sunshine part, as well as a little walk around.
It's about a 30-minute drive from Stresa, winding up the mountain, all the time following signs for Mottarone. It's a toll road, 8 euros per car (as of this writing). You'll drive under the Alpyland track when you're near the top, and then find parking in one of the dirt parking areas or along the road. Parking is all free.
In winter Casa della Neve is the center of the action. Rustic mountain decor, lots of people, large tables of families and friends, warm comfort foods, and views to die for.
If you take the cableway up from Carciano it takes about 18 minutes, plus another short chairlift ride to reach the top (or a 15-minute walk). Cost: 13.50 euro per adult/8.50 per child 4 to 12 (as of this writing). (stresa-mottarone.it)
Either way, what views...
Although there is no natural snow at the moment, Mottarone always produces enough snow for the ski lessons. Check the Alpyland, Casa della Neve, and Mt. Mottarone Ski School websites for more information.

Food: Pizza Delivery!
Pizzeria il Capriccio, which has been a Stresa takeaway pizza staple for years already, now delivers. Their menu gives a cell phone number to call to order, as well as the restaurant number. Here's their menu, along with phone numbers and hours.
This could be helpful on some tired evening when all you want to do is stay on your balcony with a bottle of red and wait for the pizza delivery car to arrive. I do not know the limits of either of their delivery zones, but I do believe they cover all of Stresa and its outlying neighborhoods, as well as possibly some extended areas.
By the way, it is not necessary to tip the pizza delivery person, but certainly you can if you wish to.

Music and Food: Jazz Evenings At Verbanella
When good friends came to visit, because it was a Thursday, we didn't even have to think where to go. Especially with a pretty evening such as this one was. We went to Caffe Bar Verbanella, since there is live jazz there every Thursday (and now Friday too) of the summer. I have written of this in other summers, but I like to keep doing so as a reminder to new visitors.
It was late June this time, so very long days. Arriving at 8:00 pm, the sky was still light. Just up the lake from us, near the Lido Blu Beach, a few people silently fished. The terrace was still empty at Verbanella; we're speaking of jazz after all, music and crowds start a bit later.
We ordered our first glasses of wine and I attempted artsy shots of the chardonnays and mountains. From the Verbanella terrace, looking at the lake, the sun sets to your left, over Baveno, causing shadow to slowly overtake the terrace.

Lido Beach Club Revisited
WALK IDEA: This idea came from a young couple staying at La Lombarda. They told me they had walked the 3 kilometers from Stresa to Baveno, along the Lungolago, then along the main road that connects the two towns. There is either a sidewalk or small shoulder to walk on for all but a short strip of the way. They found Lido Beach Club by taking a right at the fork on the main road in front of the Dino Hotel. They ate lunch at Lido Beach Club in its beautiful tent-covered restaurant, and then, eventually, they took the ferry boat back to Stresa.
I thought, what a great idea for a nice relaxing walk and day! Soon after that conversation with my young guests I found myself at Lido, noticing all that's new this year there, and reading through their new brochure:
An oasis for the senses, a place of pleasure of meeting where attention to detail is of essence and nothing is left to chance. Elegant and refined, the Lido is surrounded by a beach complete with deck chairs and parasols, a splendid lawn, a bar open from the morning and a restaurant decorated with simplicity and elegance. The kitchen, researched and Mediterranean cuisine, where the ingredients are of fresh produce market, where the tasty dishes will indulge the client in the discovery of new flavors.
I have left in the cute translation errors, but I know you get the idea. Lido is a full-service beach club, where you can come for the day and feel as if you're in an island resort. Or come for lunch... or come for drinks and aperitivo...
Aperitivo!

Restaurant: Antica Osteria Il Monte Rosso -- Michelin Two-Fork Restaurant, Five-Star View
Just want to share with you the cuuuutest menu that I have ever seeeeen. After the Tulip Festival at Villa Taranto we went to dine at Antica Osteria il Monte Rosso, on the lake in the Suna part of Verbania. They brought us up to their open balcony, which you reach by climbing a metal spiral staircase, and when we sat they presented each of us with a small wooden box. 1854 is the year the restaurant opened.
Opening the latch and the lid, we each found a collection of items: magnifying glass, old postcards, and a bit of dried flowers bound in a ribbon.

Restaurant: La Rosa Dei Venti
It's been a busy weekend working on our various projects and greeting lovely guests arriving at La Lombarda, so we stayed close to home always, and had dinner one of the evenings at La Rosa dei Venti, a restaurant directly on the lake, almost across from the boat station, that I had not yet been to. It was recommended to us by Massimo at Buscion while we were there having a pre-dinner aperitivo of a nice Tuscan red, and so we took his advice. We had no reservation, and were lucky to get a table, as it was quite full. Some might call it old-school, even old-fashioned, and I guess, in decoration and manner, it is. It's been here a long time. So the look isn't an attempt to recapture an era, it's the real deal. And some nights old-school old-fashioned is just right.
La Rosa dei Venti is on the short stretch of main road in Stresa that is not dedicated to the large grand hotels. Walking to the boat station from the center of town, turn right at the main road instead of left. On these streets you'll find Gigi Bar, Savoy, some lovely antique and clothing shops, and also this restaurant. Entering through a glass-paned wooden-door into a vestible, the restaurant then opens into a large open space with cloth-draped square tables relatively close together. Once we were seated it felt very comfortable, warm, reminded me of places from long ago. Decoration on the wood-paneled walls consists of old paintings of scenes, some local, some of other sites in Italy, while the back wall is lined with shelves and bottles of wine.

La Casera Cheese Shop
La Casera is located in Piazza Ranzoni, Verbania, under the arch in the blue wall.
La Casera is located in Verbania, right in the main piazza, and it can be reached quite easily with the VCO public bus or with the ferries.
Here's the door. You would never know what waits beyond, so go inside.
Looking in the door this is what you see. Where's lunch, you're wondering. But don't worry, you're in the right place. Walk through the shop, taking in sights and smells, whetting your appetite as you go.

'Fast-Food' Options In Stresa
A reader wanted to know places that she could pick up 'fast food', that is, quick food to grab and eat on the go for her and her kids, without having to sit down in a restaurant. I had touched on the subject earlier in the summer, in this post, about the little take-away sandwich shop called Cicinin Panini al Metro.
Now, Stresa doesn't have any true fast-food restaurants. And the places where you can find just a bite of food to go are not always easily recognizable as such from the outside. But if you want to grab a sandwich to eat later, or a quick slice of pizza to bring to a bench, here are some ideas:
The just-mentioned Cicinin Panini al Metro. This easy-to-spot little shop is located at the entrance to Piazza Cadorna, where via P. Tomaso and via Roma meet. Here you can get little subway-style sandwiches, 10 cm each, as many as you like! Different fillings listed on the board, sodas and drinks too. If you have a few moments they have cute seating upstairs.

Restaurant: Ristorante Belvedere
When two dear friends visited Stresa this summer, their first time here, I took my own advice and showed them a 'Golden Day' in Stresa. Modified the version in the link a bit to suit our own needs, but we kept many elements. We began our day leisurely with cappuccini and brioche at Gigi Bar. Then, instead of taking the ferry, we made a very special day of it and hired a private water taxi for the day. We chose to do this so that we could make a little detour, a little bit more of our time on the lake and we did a drive-by (float-by?) of Santa Caterina del Sasso, stopping for as long as we wanted, and from as many angles as we wanted, to take photos. Then, back to Isola Bella, tour of the palace, walkabout all over the island. Our taxi came just moments after I placed the phone call for it, and brought us across the water to Isola dei Pescatori, where we had lunch plans. And THAT is what I want to tell you about today ... our lunch at Ristorante Belvedere.
The above photo is from their own website, and shows the 'back' of the restaurant, taken from in the lake. Water taxis and the ferries make their stops on the other side of the island, so it's a bit busier, nosier, kiosk-filled on that side. But enter the restaurant from there and walk through, and it is like entering another world. I've been here before, and knew what to expect, but it was nice to see the pleasure on my friends' faces with their first look.
We arrived at the end of the lunch rush; the outdoor terrace, covered by a ceiling of umbrellas, was still fairly full. Having reserved, we were so fortunate to have a perfect table at the edge of the terrace. overlooking the lake. Service, from the moment we arrived, was fantastic. Attentive, friendly, elegant but never stuffy.

Music: Jazz Evenings At Cafe Verbanella
And so, this is what they're like, the jazz evenings at Cafe Bar Verbanella.
I went a little early, while they were setting up. The musicians play from the center of the inside room. The place is authentic 1960s, which somehow works so perfectly with the jazz and cocktails. As you can see, the inside is spacious, you can watch the musicians perform, and it's a perfect choice activity for any evening, including rainy ones.
This evening was lovely however, ever so slightly hazy, but cool with a soft breeze. And so we chose to sit outside. We took a table near the fence, to have an unobstructed view of the lake. I started with an Americano to drink. Campari with vermouth and a bit of soda, twist of orange. Someone brought us a few snacks to have with our aperitivi.

Restaurant: Lo Stornello
Recently we ate at Ristorante Lo Stornello, in Stresa. At one time it was a part of one of the hotels on via Cavour; now it is an independent restaurant in a good location in the center of town, between via Princepessa Margharita and via Roma. The interior, which had looked dated and uninviting, now looks fresh, clean, and more open, redone in shades of cool grey and white. The only pops of color are the thick water glasses; each table has a variety of bright, jewel-toned ones, an interesting and creative touch. The exterior, at least for now, is unchanged. But the entire front is glass, making the inside changes instantly understood.

Sierre, Switzerland -- Home Of The Best Raclette In The World
Che esperienza! What an experience! If you: 1)Love cheese, 2)Have access to a car, and 3)Want to spend a day in Switzerland, then take notes and put this onto your must-do list. Visit Chateau de Villa, a restaurant in Sierre, Switzerland, that bills itself as "Le Temple de la Raclette." I, who love Raclette, and who has already eaten some pretty darn good Raclette in various places in France, Italy, and Switzerland, have never had a Raclette experience like this one. Imagine a wine tasting... but with five types of cheeses instead of wine. And housed in the charming fifteenth-century building pictured above.

Restaurant: Pascia
The exterior of Ristorante Pascia
When I wrote about the Michelin starred and recommended restaurants in and near Stresa recently, I had no idea how soon I would have the pleasure of eating in one. But here I was, spending an evening at Pascia, a one-starred Michelin restaurant about 20 minutes from Stresa, in the town of Invorio. Pascia is located in a neighborhood that seems almost suburban, in a building that could be mistaken for an elegant house. Instead, it's a very elegant restaurant. So elegant that I felt nervous for some reason. We asked if we could take some photos, feeling nervous even to do that, and so I am able to share the dishes with you.
Apart from the menu posted on the website, which changes regularly, there were also 'Chef's menus', flights of small dishes some of which were on the menu and some not. There was a traditional flight, which I suppose would consist of more recognizable dishes. We decided, however, to toss caution to the wind and go with the innovative flight. Allora.. here's how the evening progressed.
