Event: World Championship Fireworks 2014

This is beautiful Omegna, a small city just 25 minutes by car from Stresa. Last weekend we came here for the San Vito festival, which takes place every year at the end of August. The highlight is the fireworks exhibition, part of the World Championship of Fireworks, which features a series of fireworks shows in different locations around the area.

First of all, we somehow scored an amazing parking spot. Not easy at all, since 25,000+ people gather here for this fireworks show, the final in the summer series. We were parked near these boats below. Gorgeous day! As you can see many took advantage of the day to sunbathe, as well as save a spot for the show later.

We didn't worry at all about finding a viewing spot. Omegna surrounds a small bay, and there is a great view all around. So instead we explored. Because this is a huge festival that goes on all day, as well as extending into days before and after. There is a central stage set up for a band later...

Heard Around Town

I've been serenaded to sleep every night this week with live music. It seems that just about every night now in Stresa, in August, there is live music on a stage somewhere in town. On some evenings there are actually several groups in different venues. These photos are of a jazz duo at Piazza Cadorna, where via Roma and via P. Tomaso meet. The night before, a dance performance in Piazza Possi, just outside my door. And a night before that, a cover band called "i Colori", singing outside my window. The music always ends relatively early, to not disturb, and it's a lovely way to end evenings here as you stroll around. Expect this to continue throughout August at least.

Why Is Napoleon Marching Through Stresa?

It's definitely a bit like living in Disney World. One weekend ago Stresa was full of cowboys and everyone was line dancing during Festa Country; this past weekend Napoleon and his troops marched through town and fired cannons. It's been a couple of centuries since he was last here. Welcome to life in Stresa...

Crowds gathered in the piazzas and streets as soldiers, officers, courtiers, drummers, and Napoleon himself all paraded around town. The uniforms were very detailed and authentic, (no one had tell-tale Nike trainers showing under their French army trousers for example,) and the guns and bayonets looked scarily real.

Festa Country!

I was sort of missing an all-American Fourth of July, so fortunately the July 5th "Festa Country" in Stresa more than filled that need. With all the plaid shirts, cowboy hats, and boots that everyone was wearing, both visitors and the shopkeepers, waiters, and vendors alike, it was actually difficult to remember that this was Stresa I was walking through! And then add line dancing and a mechanical bull, and the illusion became pretty complete.

The gorgeous weather didn't hurt any either. We stayed out in the town all through lunch, and then again through the evening. Almost all of the shops were adorned with bales of hay and "country" decorations. Country music played everywhere.

Events: Summer Events 2014 -- Isola Bella By Night

For those of you here or visiting this summer, below find several upcoming Summer events and special activities involving Isola Bella. Two of them bring you to Isola Bella at night, the third gives you a great view of said island from Stresa, lit up at night, while the fourth tranquilly transports you around the islands at night. The dilemma will be how to fit them all into your plans!

Bella By Night
Every Friday, from 13 June through 29 August, 2014, Isola Bella is hosting Calici Sotto Le Stelle, Glasses Under the Stars. A 10 Euro ticket gets you transport to Isola Bella, a wine glass (the calice), and your first drink. On the island you'll find live music and vendors selling street food, while island restaurants and bars will also be open and joining in the fun. Drinks are discounted in establishments participating in this promotion. Each Friday evening a different type of music will be offered, beginning with Beatles and Rolling Stones classics!

The last Saturday of each month a similar event is offered, called Sabato al'Isola, Saturday at the Island. By making a dinner reservation at a restaurant on the island participating in the promotion, you receive free transport to and from. There will be live music on the island also on these nights.

Transport to the island begins at 20.00 (8:00 pm), from the Carciano dock (where the cableway station is).

Event: Carnivale 2014

Hear ye, hear ye! Carneval week has arrived again! The annual procession of King Falcett took place on a warm and sunny day, and after the Falcett procession to Piazza Marconi the entire entourage continued on to Piazza Cadorna as always for the costume judging. After a proclamation from the King and Queen, the contestants each had a chance to display their costumes. There were categories for single costumes, pairs, and groups. Below are the first and second place winners this year:

Events: A Day Filled With Special Fun For Natale

So what's going on in Stresa in these holiday weeks? Well today in particular, a lot.

On this Saturday one can find a host of activities, both traditional favorites and new additions, around town:

Too cute. Isola Pescatori has been transformed into l'Isola dei Balocchi, the Island of Toys. After purchasing your ticket and special blue wristband from the special Blue Fairy at the special gazebo set up in Piazza Marconi, children and families can board the ferry to the island to experience different activities set up just for them. There's old-fashioned puppet shows, readings of fairy tales (by fairies of course!), and game stations. Three restaurants on the island have arranged special meals and play stations for the children, so the adults can also enjoy.

Back in Stresa, near the ferry dock and overlooking Piazza Marconi, Hotel Milan Speranza au Lac has a wonderful free exhibit of Pinocchios set up on their veranda. The pieces on loan are part of a large collection (more than 500) owned by collector Brasca Ambrose.

Another Weekend, Another Food Festival! Gorgonzola!

Another food festival in the piazza! I love how all these winter events are starting to fill up otherwise-empty Piazza Cadorna. This past weekend it was the Stresa nel gusto con il gorgonzola festival, which featured, naturally, gorgonzola cheese. Restaurants around town who chose to participate were also featuring gorgonzola on their menus, and at lunchtime Polenta Concia was served from a large tent in the center of the piazza. Polenta Concia, translated as 'Dirty Polenta,' is a comfy-sounding sort of mix of polenta, ragu, and gorgonzola cheese.I took a walk around the piazza in the afternoon; it was nicely crowded, and not only that, I saw many people purchasing, from all of the vendors.

A Piazza Filled With Chocolate

Question: On a chilly, dark, Friday evening in November, not tourist season, what can one do to fill Piazza Cadorna with people?

Answer: Chocolate!

If there's anything worth devoting an entire weekend to, it's chocolate. And that is exactly what happened in Stresa last weekend, in the season's first event of the "Stresa nel gusto" program. Beginning with this evening that I photographed, chocolate festivities continued on Saturday with a slicing of the giant chocolate salami made by the students of Stresa's hotel management school, Maggia. And on Sunday, there was a reading by the author Rossana Girotto of excerpts of her book, "Ofelia sapeva nuotare," along with servings of hot chocolate and musical accompaniment by flutist Emiliana Parenzi Colombo. And always, the booths selling and demonstrating chocolate.

Here are a few photos that I took on Friday evening; just really a tip of the chocolate iceberg:

This producer, from Lecco, had an incredibly realistic display of chocolates shaped like metal tools -- gears, wrenches, pliers, etc. The perfect gift for the men, no? I especially liked the collection of nuts, bolts, and screws. All these are coated in a dusting of cocoa  powder that recreates rust almost too well.

Videos Of The 52nd Annual Stresa Festival

For your weekend enjoyment.

Here are some short video highlights produced by Stresa Festival of some of this recently closed season's 25 performances. The season, which ran from July 19 through September 7, was divided into three segments. The weekend of July 19 through July 21, called Midsummer Jazz Concerts, comprised five jazz performances. Musical Meditations (Meditazioni in musica)  was the segment from July 25 through July 28. And Between Heaven and Earth (Tra terra e cielo) featured 16 performances between August 24 and the September 7 closing. If you've enjoyed any of these performances, reminisce. If you haven't, then you can get a glimpse of what you've been missing and plan for next year.

Food Festivals

There are so many different food festivals throughout the summer in Stresa and the surrounding towns. Like this one last night, and again this evening, the annual Cibi di Strada, Street Food, in Intra. In four areas around Intra, Piazza Ranzoni, Piazza San Vittore, Via San Vittore, and Corso Mameli, between 6 and 10 pm, more than a dozen restaurants set up serving tables outside. One could purchase tickets, 10 euro for three, and then exchange each for a plate of food. Pick up your wine glass and its holder to wear around your neck. Each glass of wine was also one ticket. Then sit at one of the tables also set up for dining, or wander to the next serving station, or across to the lake.

Want your mouth to water? Listen to some of these offerings... From Gattabuoa: Arancini di Riso con Gorgonzola e Panatura di Riso Venere; from Il Ristorante Piccolo Lago: Spiedino Maranata, Batida de Coco; and from La Pesa, the very intriguing Sandwich con Gelato al Parmigiano Reggiano e Prosciutto di Parma. Yes, that's an ice cream sandwich made with parmesan and prosciutto flavored gelatos.

Piazza Cadorna Jazz

Heard some wonderful jazz the other evening in Piazza Cadorna. On several evenings throughout the summer you can have your dinner in the piazza accompanied by jazz. The bands will be set up on the Cafe Nazionale side of the piazza, and music begins at 7:30.      (   continued ... )

Music: Jazz Evenings At Cafe Verbanella

Verbanella is located on the lake side of the Lungolago, across from the Regina Palace Hotel.

Verbanella has long been famous in Stresa for its cocktails, so I've come up with a little 'recipe' of my own. I call it 'Jazz on the Lake':

Great jazz
Comfortable restaurant with plenty of seating indoors and out
Unbeatable view of the sunset
Great drinks, beer, and wine
Well-priced dinner and foods

Mix all together well, pour into a tall glass, and what do you have?
Another perfect evening at Cafe Bar Verbanella.

Try one yourself soon and no doubt you'll agree.

Jazz nights are a summer tradition that continues. Check the website or walk by for the current schedule.  Cafe Bar Verbanella

Buon San Valentino 2013!

I love Stresa... You love Stresa too, right? But lest you should forget this, you can remember it always, per sempre, with these sweet alabaster heart paperweights. You can find them all year, not just today, at the beautiful shop that sells jewelry, glass, and stone items, facing Piazza Possi, in between Osteria dei Amici and the arch leading to the Friday market. You know where I mean.

A tutti i miei amici di Stresa Sights ... Buon San Valentino.

Christmas Concerto -- Gospel Concert At The Stresa Convention Center

Each year during the Christmas season Stresa offers citizens and guests the opportunity to attend a free concert at the Stresa Convention Center. This building is Stresa's large, modern, cultural and business center. Throughout the year there are numerous events here, for both arts and commerce. Below is a photo of the Center, maybe you've noticed it, located on Piazzle Europa, basically behind and to the right of the Regina Palace Hotel.

Un Salto Nel Passato -- A Jump Into The Past

Baveno has a winter tradition, Un Salto Nel Passato, A Jump into the Past. A year of planning, and hundreds of volunteers, are needed to organize this town-sized event, in which Baveno returns to the mid 1700s, complete with all manner of shops, trades, townspeople, and foods. The transformation of the town is magical. Wherever necessary, modern features are covered with what must be miles of bamboo sheeting. And the attention to detail is very, very impressive, from clothing, to interiors, to machines and equipment. This year, I had the pleasure of attending.

This is the way it worked: Upon arriving in Baveno's central piazza, we visited the registrars at the dazi booth, who gave us our official documents stating that we were now citizens of Baveno in the 1700s.

We then traded in our euros for a sack of francs, representing the old money of that era. We would use these later on for some nourishment in old Baveno. The term francs, I discovered, originates as a medieval term for gold coins depicting the king of the Franks, and then evolved into a currency standard in many countries throughout Europe and extending into parts of Asia and Africa.

Then, following a marked path throughout the town, one begins a tour of 56 different shops or areas. Each was clearly labeled with its original dialect name. The first stop was the feree', the iron workers, seen in the photo below. They, as all of the volunteers, were actually 'working'; in the iron shop they were creating tools using 300-year-old methods. A charming fact to know is that many of the volunteers in this event are actual present-day practitioners of same trade they were demonstrating. And sometimes, their families had been in this trade for all these generations since the 1700s. Much of the equipment and items being used comes from personal family collections of this type. The pride of sharing these family traditions was visibly evident to me, and a unique feeling that I cannot relate to often in the U.S.

Now that I've explained the premise, let's leave 2012, let's remove all signs of the 21st century from the photographs, and let's take this jump into the past:       (  continued....   )

Music: The Stresa Festival Closes Another Season

With the performance by the Frankfurt Radio Sinfonie-Orchester and Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili last month, the wildly successful 52nd season of the Stresa Festival was closed.

Were you fortunate enough to have seen any of the 2012 Stresa Festival Musicale events?

Food: Buffet di Ferragosto

As they say, "Life's short... Eat dessert first."

Remember a little while ago when I wrote about the breakfast buffets at many of the large hotels along the lake? And how they are open to all, not only to guests? Well, here's another way you could have pretended to be a guest at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromee. Each year, on the mid-summer Ferragosto holiday, the hotel prepares a buffet dinner of extraordinary proportions. These photos were published on Facebook by the hotel, of the food and the decorations, taken before the guests arrived at 8 pm on August 15, 2012. By nightfall, the garden was full, and many of these platters empty.
