Event: Carnivale 2014

Hear ye, hear ye! Carneval week has arrived again! The annual procession of King Falcett took place on a warm and sunny day, and after the Falcett procession to Piazza Marconi the entire entourage continued on to Piazza Cadorna as always for the costume judging. After a proclamation from the King and Queen, the contestants each had a chance to display their costumes. There were categories for single costumes, pairs, and groups. Below are the first and second place winners this year:

First place went to this colorful family of farmers;

and second place was taken by a group of sweet MandMs and their yellow bag.

It was a packed crowd in Piazza Cadorna,

A lucky few had special VIP viewing from their own balconies.

While the weather was lovely, it was raining -- confetti. Sacks and sacks and sacks of it.

I think it becomes a fun reminder and wardrobe for the rest of Carnevale week.

That was Sunday. Now, Wednesday, I see I was right. Stresa streets are still dotted with confetti, which helped continue the festive atmosphere in the piazza for the traditional Tuesday Mardi Gras lunch of polenta and salsiccia.

On Sunday, we enjoyed some of these tortelli, a traditional Carnevale treat. Basically, fried dough with sugar. And whatever name you call your fried dough (back at the Amish county fairs I used to go to it was just called 'fried dough,') it's always delicious.
