With the performance by the Frankfurt Radio Sinfonie-Orchester and Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili last month, the wildly successful 52nd season of the Stresa Festival was closed.

This drive I call, because clearly I enjoy naming my car trips, "The Almost Lago Maggiore Express Loop." Loosely following the path of the Express ship and trains, we saw many of the same sights, with a few others thrown in just for us. So I'll tell you about the trip. But, I don't necessarily suggest that you do what we did. Because we did the trip, at least the first half of it, without aid of map, GPS system, phone apps, etc. Not because we didn't have them; but just because we just didn't want to use them.

This is a relatively easy drive (ok, when you're the passenger) which brought us from Stresa to Chamonix in France, to Martigny in Switzerland, and then back to Stresa, in a large, diverse loop. We began by heading off out of Stresa as if driving to Torino, but before reaching that city we switched onto the A5 motorway toward Aosta. At this point, now driving north, you are faced with the looming line of Italian and Swiss Alps in front of you, and the mountains only become larger and larger until you find yourself in them. The Matterhorn is one of them... The road becomes curvy as you wind through famous Italian ski villages, such as Courmayeur and Morgex. This is the only major road that travels in this direction to France. The drive to this point, reaching the French border at a leisurely pace, takes about two hours. ( continued )

Edit Post
I always stop and admire the ornate ironwork, the lavoro in ferro, on this house. The entrance is located directly on the busy, narrow pedestrian alley frequented by tourists, via Principessa Margherita, separated from the alley by a tall iron fence a few meters long. The ironwork is intricate enough to offer a bit of privacy to the terrace behind it, but it also is so unique that it calls attention to all who pass by. In the center of the gate there is this golden seahorse? dragon? with a large hook and ring; The height and form lead me to think it was for keeping a horse tied to. Which make me wonder how old the gate is.
